2013-02-09 testing the cold weather gear

This is now my third favorite photo of me on a bike! Thank you Bela for the Winter riding Bib pants and thank you Closer to Free for the long sleeve jersey! they are is the best thing ever!!!!!!

The photos almost make it look like I'm riding on the road huh? too much snow and ice to ride, but I need to get the base miles in!

I did the stationary trainer for 1 hour.
Averaged 16.3.  it was 25 degrees +/- 2 degrees.
at about 45 minutes in the 25 degrees my midsection was too hot and my feet were too cold.
I was warm everywhere except for my toes. I would have gone longer if feet were warm, but they were feeling numb.

legs
had winter riding long pant bib by Canondale. legs were warm! It felt awesome! the fore legs and knees have a thick membrane for windbreaking, the rear and majority of the pant is a spandex type material. feels great. feels warm.

midsection
had 3 layers on midsection. against the body I had a wicking cycle jersey (Closer to free year 2011 Marshall (the way it was spelled) jersey to be precise), Canondale cycle sleeves (they feel cool at first, but are sure to keep your skin dry). a long arm closer to free cycle jersey as the fleece substitute and an under-armour cold weather jacket/windbreaker (not in photo). I felt warm enough to keep going! After working up some heat, I was tempted to unzip a bit....but that is not the right thing to do.

head
under armour cap, additional bandana covering my brow and my ears.  I felt just right, but probably not enough if riding on the road. I usually use the UA cap and a fleece band over my ears. this is enough for my ears and just the right fit for my helmet.  the under armour cap always leaves this silly line on my forehead... I wish they would do something about where they place the stiching.

feet
wool socks, cycle shoe and bootie covers by garneau.  my feet were still cold, I will try the foot warmers in the bootie cover next time. Walmart sells some type of rig for Deer Hunters... I'll test and post here.

If I can ride in 25 degrees and enjoy it this much......wow I'm gonna really love spring and summer!

Wow this water is ice cold, where is the Jack Daniels?, not that I drink while I ride. I just need something to keep my water bottle from icing.

2013-02-09 30/30

30 km in 30" of snow
1 hour... 16.2 miles, 26 degrees.
Jordan rode with me for about 5 minutes.

Jordan listened, practiced a sprint, and practiced a finish line celebration

2013-02-09 30/30

Did about 30 km in 30" of snow.
Who says we are not dedicated!
who says we are not nuts!

duct tape over the date, this years ride is September 7, 2013
Jordan couldn't believe that I let him put on my Marshall Jersey......It was the only Closer to Free jersey that fit over his jacket... Marshall was spelled wrong anyway!

2013-02-08 Support CT Challenge

Facebook Friends:

I am reaching out to you with hopes that you can help me with my yearly  "Connecticut Challenge" fund raising event.

In the past several years I have lost close relatives and friends to cancer.  I currently have very close relatives
and dear friends who are fighting as well as surviving it.

All of you know that I am a firm believer in support groups, education, proper therapy, nutrition and exercise.

Through this event the Connecticut Challenge raises funds.  The Connecticut Challenge funds provide cancer survivors and their families with endless support and resources for "better living as a survivor" through out our state.

My nephew Eric and I will be 2 of 200 riders that will ride the 180mile Connecticut challenge in honor of those that we love who are survivors and in memory of those who we have lost.

I have attached a pdf file letter and a donation form.  If you are able and willing to help us with a donation please do so.  We and the many survivors will truly benefit from it.

2013-01-01 Goal for 2013

I am hoping to set a personal record this year.  I have never truly kept track of my training nor my accumulative yearly mileage , but I believe that I have never cycled beyond 1500 miles per year.

Like everyone that I know.....I am getting older, I've become (what my wife and sons call)  a semi- permanent fixture within my office, my blood pressure is up, my bad cholesterol is up, my good cholesterol is down, there may be signs of sugar in the blood and my stress and anxiety level is through the roof. After a few visits to the doctors office to complain about tingling sensations when anxious or stressed, I get a pocket full of prescriptions....and a "I will see you in a few weeks".   We all know that more time spent in the office equals less time spent exercising or enjoying family and friends.  To take away ( from your body) the ability to exercise is nothing less than physical, emotional and psychological abuse.

We all need to work.  We all need to complete our daily tasks . We all need to answer to and please those that we work for.  We all need to keep up with ever changing technology, resources and our competition.  We all need to assure that our tasks are done correctly, efficiently, in expensively, on time and to the clients satisfaction.  We all have to at some point realized. (with experience) that to do this requires much more time than we have in what used to be an eight hour work day.

Balance
I need to find a balance.
I know that I need to work to live and I love what I do for a living.  I need and want to be physically fit and in a healthy state of mind so that I can continue to do what I do. There is no way to maintain health without proper diet and exercise.

Cycling time is my sanity time.  When I ride I think of nothing more than the bike the road and how far away can I get from ( bla.bla.bla).  I enjoy the ride, the view, the distance, the challenge.  I never get on the bike without a destination in mind and then I get to it.  I can always deviate, but seldom do.

50/50/50
I have cycled through out Connecticut.  I cycled through out Arizona when I lived there.  I have not cycled many other states.  I am setting a goal of 50/50/50.  I would like to ride 50 miles in 50 states before I am 50 and then write about it.  I'm not writing to get a book deal or anything along those   lines. I just want to inspire my son to set some type of goal and then see it through.

2013
This year I plan on riding at least 3,000 miles.  In order keep to my 50/50/50, I need to ride 50 in 7 states.  I already have the states and the routes planned out and will blog about them when they are complete.

January
I plan on putting in base miles in orders get me jump started.
